Open call for Early-Career IGES committee members (ECICM)
Application for graduate students and postdocs to serve on an IGES committee for two years

The Young Investigators Committee (YIC) is calling for applications for early-career researchers to join IGES committees for two years. Applications will be opened until December 31st. Nominations will be announced by the YIC on January 27, 2025

IGES Committees with open positions:

Scientific Program: sets the scientific program for the annual meeting

The scientific program committee focuses on the programming for the annual scientific program.  This includes determining topics for the meeting, selection and invitation of invited speakers, reviewing abstracts and program scheduling. The scientific program committee interfaces with the education and local organizing committee. The annual program should be inclusive with consideration of many variables including sex, race, career development and region (North America, Europe, Asia and other regions where possible) for selection of invited speakers. Committee members commit to attending monthly teleconferences leading up to the annual meeting as well as the reading and scoring of 150-200 submitted abstracts divided across the full committee.

Publications: interacts with the journal Genetic Epidemiology and nominates awardees for best publication

Activities: The publications committee selects the best paper published in IGES’ flagship journal, Genetic Epidemiology, for each calendar year. Responsibilities: Committee members review and score a subset of papers, and then convene with the full committee to decide on the winning paper. The student/postdoc will help evaluate shortlisted papers (20-30) for IGES awards.

ELSI: deals with Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in genetic epidemiological research

Members of the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI) committee are responsible for identifying, anticipating and being responsive to ELSI that concern IGES and the broad genetic epidemiology community. Members can contribute to the development of new or revised guidelines, education and outreach material on ELSI that are relevant to the IGES community. Regular meetings are held 2 to 4 times a year.

Education: outreach to the scientific community on genetic epidemiology methods

Mandate: The committee focuses on promoting knowledge of genetic epidemiology. This includes recommending activities for educating students, the training of professionals in genetic epidemiology, and raising public awareness on genetic epidemiology. The committee shall be especially concerned with education at all levels relating to genetic epidemiology, particularly at the professional level, and should encourage liaison with the education committees of other groups. The committee also addresses requests to communicate basic genetic epidemiology knowledge, its advances, and its applications to the public at large.

Activities: The committee meets monthly to identify training topics, and to coordinate workshops to be held in upcoming IGES annual meetings.

Communications: promotes IGES news and activities to IGES members and the broader scientific community

Mandate: The committee promotes IGES events and activities to IGES members and to the wider scientific community, and facilitates communication within and outside the society.

Activities: Members of the Communications Committee manage the IGES website, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages. We use these media platforms to advertise not only IGES news and events, but also happenings in genetic epidemiology that may be of interest to IGES members. We also maintain a section on the IGES webpage on relevant job position openings.  Expectations:
