IGES 2025 Invited Speakers
Professor Claudia Langenberg
Director of PHURI, former Program Leader at the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge Claudia is a public health specialist combining her expertise with research focused on molecular epidemiology. Her work integrates large-scale genomic and metabolomic data to discover, prioritise and characterize metabolic pathways and test their causal relevance and specificity across a range of diseases, uncovering genetic influences on thousands of molecules in the blood, using this knowledge to better understand human disease such as type 2 diabetes. In 2018 Claudia received the Helmholtz International Fellow Award and was named in the Top 20 Female Scientists in the UK in 2022.
Michael Wu, PhD
Professor, Biostatistics Program
Public Health Sciences Division, Fred Hutch Member
Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center (TDS IRC), Fred Hutch Dr. Michael Wu is a biostatistician whose research focuses on the development and application of statistical methods for translational science, including clinical trials, and population-based studies. He applies his statistical expertise toward the “omics” sciences, which include genomics, epigenomics, proteomics/metabolomics and metagenomics. Dr. Wu is also a member of the Fred Hutch-based SWOG Statistical Center, for which he helps design and analyze cancer clinical trials. Other areas of interest include reproductive and birth outcomes, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease and environmental health-related traits.
Eleftheria Zeggini
Eleftheria works in the field of Translational Genomics. Her team develops and applies robust statistical and computational tools to integrate information gleaned from deep molecular, genomics and epidemiological approaches to address important biomedical research challenges. "In 2018 I joined Helmholtz Munich, where I am founding director of the Institute of Translational Genomics. I am interested in dissecting the role of sequence variation in human health and disease by coupling high-throughput sequencing technologies with the study of diverse populations and strategies linking electronic health records to genomics. Our activities are underpinned by the integration of big multi-omics data, and by the development of computational and statistical approaches for the next generation of translational genomics studies." Eleftheria is a Liesel Beckmann Distinguished Professor and hold the Chair of Translational Genomics at Technical University of Munich (TUM) School of Medicine.
Xiang Zhou
Xiang Zhou, Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan. Prior to joining UM, he was a William H. Kruskal Instructor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago. He completed his postdoctoral training in Matthew Stephens’ lab in the Department of Human Genetics and Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago, where he also collaborated closely with researchers in Yoav Gilad’s lab. He earned his MS and PhD degrees at Duke University, where he was advised by Fan Wang and Scott Schmidler, and collaborated closely with Jerry Reiter. He was trained as both a statistician and a biologist.
