Duties and Responsibilities

Dr. Debashree Ray (https://sites.google.com/view/debashree/) is seeking to hire a postdoctoral fellow for a National Institute of Health (NIH) funded study of genetic determinants of type 2 diabetes and its biomarkers. The successful applicant will primarily work on development of statistical methods and open-source software/tools in human genetics, with a focus on trans-ancestry, multi-omics, multi-trait research of complex diseases. The applicant will also conduct large-scale data analyses of genetic epidemiologic studies of type 2 diabetes, with the opportunity to work in other disease areas if interested. The applicant will receive one-on-one mentorship from Dr. Ray to help achieve their short- and long-term career goals. The applicant is expected to write multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts as first author; and will be encouraged to present their work in national conferences, to participate in grant writing or apply for independent grants/funding, and to gain teaching/mentoring skills through regular journal clubs and team meetings.

This is a 2-year training position in the Department of Epidemiology (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health), with possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The applicant will get to collaborate not only within the Department of Epidemiology but also with Dr. Ray’s collaborators in the Department of Biostatistics. There will be opportunities to interact with other trainees through the Statistical Genetics working group (http://www.jhustatgen.net/).

Position Qualifications

Candidates with Ph.D. or equivalent degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related quantitative field are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have:

- strong research interest in statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology,

- demonstrated ability to code in one or more scientific programming languages (e.g., R, Python, C/C++),

- ability to conduct efficient and reproducible data analyses,

- ability to lead statistical modeling research,

- ability to work in a collaborative environment, and

- strong communication & writing skills.
